The meat prices in the Transnistrian area have surged 1.5 times since the beginning of 2008, Info-Prim Neo's correspondent in the area reports. Now a kilo of pork or veal is 85 local rubles (100 lei). Many inhabitants of the area go to Chisinau to buy mutton and veal, which practically is not to be found on local markets and is cheaper in the capital. The high meat prices are explained by the fact that this year Transnistria experiences a sharp shortage of bred animals and poultry. The private sector – the main market supplier – is experiencing drops of 80.5% Dubasari town, 75.3% – in Rabnita, 30% – in Grigoriopol. Some producers from the area forecast severe scarcity of produce, too. “Breeding cows, sheep or goats is becoming more and more problematic, animals have turned into luxurious articles,” the Prednistrovye newspaper writes.
