The measures taken by the authorities in the second half of September and the first half of October contributed to slowing down the fourth COVID-19 pandemic wave in Moldova, which, according to statistics of the Ministry of Health, is close to a peak, shows an analytical note by the Association for Participatory Democracy ADEPT, IPN reports.
During the first two weeks of October, the number of COVID-19 cases in the Transnistrian region represented over 26% of the total number of cases recorded in the Republic of Moldova, even if the population in the Transnistrian region represents only ~12% of the country’s population, says the analysis.
The immunization process in the Republic of Moldova during the past three months has declined continuously even if the health facilities have enough vaccine doses to continue the vaccination process at the highest pace witnessed in July. The decrease in the number of daily vaccinations is due to the fact that the total number of vaccinated people is close to the limit of ~30% that is indicated by multiple opinion polls as the number of people who believe that the immunization process is efficient in the fight against COVID-19. This way, the Republic of Moldova is among the last ranked European states, alongside Bulgaria, Ukraine, and Armenia.
“If we examine the number of lethal cases the past two weeks, we see considerable correlation with the percentage of immunized population. There is no doubt that despite the very important role of immunization, the restrictive measures of the authorities and their observance by the population continue to play an important role in containing the pandemic,” says the analytical note.
By the number of COVID-19 cases and associated deaths, the Republic of Moldova is closer to the middle of the rankings, occupying a place between the Central and Eastern Europe states of the EU, but the slow immunization process risk worsening these statistics.
