A group of experts from the Millennium Challenge Corporation is this week on a visit to Moldova to discuss with Moldovan authorities the process of working out the country’s proposal for the Compact Programme. The delegation is headed by Christopher P. Williams, country director for Moldova. The main goal of the mission of experts is to consult Chisinau Government at the initial stage of working out the Programme, and to have meetings with representatives of the government, the private sector and international organisations’ missions to Moldova. The group of experts is going to make a step-by-step economic analysis to identify the most important constraints and impediments that slows the economic development at macro-economic and at smaller levels. The results of the analysis will be used to draw up the proposal that will be submitted to MCC. On 8 November 2006, Moldova became eligible for developing proposals for assistance under MCA following the Board of Directors’ decision. To date, the Corporation has approved Compacts worth USD 3 bln for 11 countries. The US Government decided at the end of last year to offer Moldova financial assistance of USD 24.7 mln under the Preliminary Program of the Millennium Challenge Corporation for supporting initiatives of combating corruption. Chisinau Government hopes in the future to receive about USD 300 mln under the Millennium Challenge Programme.
