A consignment of consumables, cleaning and disinfecting supplies to the total value of 285,000 lei was bought for maternity hospitals of Moldova and was already distributed to the Mother and Child Institute and to the maternity hospitals in Căușeni and Orhei. The donation was made in the framework of the COVID-19 Prevention and Response Project that is financed by USAID and is implemented by UNICEF Moldova, IPN reports, quoting a press release of UNICEF Moldova.

The goods are intended for pregnant women, fresh mothers and newborns and also for healthcare workers of 11 national perinatal centers of the second and third levels. Supplies will also be delivered to the maternity hospitals in Soroca, Cahul, Ceadâr Lunga, Edineț, Hâncești, Ungheni, and to the maternity hospital of Municipal Hospital No. 1.

Sergiu Gladun, director of the Mother and Child Institute, said the assistance is very important for the perinatal centers of Moldova. “We received very useful things for newborns, pregnant women and fresh mothers, which we can use to prevent the spread of the coronavirus,” stated Sergiu Gladun.

Nelly Revenco, president of the Pediatric Society of Moldova, noted that the Mother and Child Institute received extraordinary support as many families are socially underprivileged and now the parents cannot work and these products are very important for them. “The medical workers can also teach the mother how to correctly disinfect the surfaces at home and to look after the child,” stated Nelly Revenco.

UNICEF Moldova Health Officer Angela Capcelea said the frequent washing of the hands with water and soap and the disinfection of surfaces are among the most important, cheap and accessible methods of preventing the spread of the virus.

The project forms part of the US$2.2 million assistance offered by the U.S. Government through USAID to stop the spread of COVID-19 in Moldova. “The support is provided to prevent and combat infection among pregnant women, children and breastfeeding mothers and among medical personnel so as to respond in a coordinated, efficient and prompt way to the necessities of the vulnerable groups and those who are exposed to an increased risk during the COVID-19 pandemic,” says the press release.

Within the same program, all the health centers in rural communities and district centers will soon benefit from cleaning and disinfecting supplies. Globally, UNICEF provided over 12 million people with sanitation and hygiene supplies, while about 1.67 billion people received useful information on hand washing and cough and sneeze hygiene.
