Doctor Habilitate in Philology Maria Shleahtitski said the law on the functioning of languages on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, which offers a special status to the Russian language, is a geopolitical game that was to be reported to the Kremlin by particular political forces, IPN reports.

“It is paving of the way for the eventual snap parliamentary elections. It is nonsense having an official language of the state and declaring another language as language of interethnic communication. The official language of a state already performs this function,” Maria Shleahtitski stated in a program on TVR Moldova channel.

She noted that Article 13 of the Constitution, which says that the Moldovan language is the official language of the Republic of Moldova, will not disappear from the Supreme Law soon, even if there is a Constitutional Court judgment saying that Romanian is the official language of the state.

“This Article 13 of the Constitution generates votes to the parties of the left and also to the parties of the right. The dual unit of measurement rules in the Republic of Moldova. Two languages, two identities, two histories - this means division, while the division is in the interests of particular forces,” stated Maria Shleahtitski.

The law on the functioning of languages was adopted by the Socialist and For Moldova MPs on December 16, 2020. Under the law, the Moldovan authorities must ensure the conditions needed for using and developing Russian as a language of interethnic communication in Moldova. The law also obliges the state institutions to ensure, on request, translation from the official language into the Russian language. The law was challenged in the Constitutional Court and this is to pronounce on its constitutionality on January 21.
