Maria Biesu would have turned 80 today

Artists of the National Opera House, people of culture and government officials rendered homage to opera singer Maria Biesu who would have turned 80 today, August 3. The commemoration event was held near the grave of the National Opera Prima Donna at the Central Cemetery in Chisinau, IPN reports.

Prime Minister Valeriu Strelet said that Maria Biesu is the nation’s symbol and pride, a benchmark and a value that we must promote. “It is our duty to remember her and to promote the ideals and values in which our Nightingale and Cio-Cio San believed. We must promote her as a model that should be followed by the talented young people, who must believe in their own forces,” he stated.

This year, the Festival “Maria Biesu” will be held under the aegis of the Prime Minister of Moldova on September 4-14. An album in memory of the soprano will be launched at the end of August.

Maria Biesu died on May 16, 2012. The same year, the Government of Moldova decided that the National Opera House will bear her name.

In her career, the soprano sang on great opera stages in Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Paris, Warsaw, Sydney, Helsinki, and Tokyo and was conferred the title of the Best Cio-Cio San in the world.
