The Government requested the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAIA) to draft and submit for approval a project for supporting the breeding farms. This summer’s bad climate compelled many farmers to slaughter a significant part of livestock. The Government hopes that by offering subsidies it can contribute to revitalizing the farming business. “We will offer subsidies to farmers in the future as well, but we have to invest the funds in the places where a maximal added value income is possible”, stated Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev during the meeting of the Commission for Emergencies on September 7. According to Minister Anatolie Gorodenco, the animal genetic fund of Moldova was practically destroyed by year 2001. Out of 17 breeds of cattle and 14 breeds of porcine animals developed in the year 1987, only 1 breed of cattle and 2 of pigs were left in 2001. During the last 5 years, the Ministry managed to stop the destruction of the genetic fund. This year the Moldovan market was supplied with domestic animal products at a 70% rate, compared to 6% recorded in 2001.
