President Maia Sandu said the parliamentary opposition’s protest is a democratic exercise. The opposition can express its dissatisfaction with the high rate of inflation in the country, but they should not forget that the war waged by the Russian Federation is the main cause of inflation. The official requested the Prosecutor’s Office to correctly handle the cases involving the opposition leaders so as to refute the rumors that these are political in character, IPN reports.

President Sandu said the authorities are not scared by the opposition’s protests and any citizen in a democratic country can show their dissatisfaction with the work of the government. The accusations that the government is instructed from outside how to manage the country are nonsense.

“This is an aberration that has been repeated by the opposition for a period as they no longer know what to invent. We were elected by the citizens of the Republic of Moldova and it was a freely expressed vote. We are making effort to deliver our promises. This war makes things more difficult, but the prices increase in other countries too, including in the country that is preferred by the Socialists and Communists, Russia. We will continue to help the people, but the reforms will also continue – the justice sector reform, the fight against corruption, improvement of the business climate. We are a free and democratic country. The opposition can protest, but the developments depend on the citizens, not on several people from the opposition who are frustrated because they can no longer steal,” Maia Sandu stated in the talk show “Good Evening” on the public TV channel.

The official assured that the reopening of the famous case featuring ex-President Igor Dodon, who was allegedly bribed by Vlad Plahotniuc, and the stripping of MPs Ilan Șor and Marina Tauber of legislative immunity are not political in character.

“It’s not a surprise for me that these persons are featured in criminal cases. The investigation press during many years has reported that these had been involved in corruption schemes. I hope nothing is fabricated. I request the Prosecutor’s Office to obey the law, to gather the necessary evidence. We want fair trials so that the state does not lose cases later, at the ECHR. I don’t think someone doubts that these persons violated the law and committed abuses in time,” stated Maia Sandu.

Recently, former President of the Republic of Moldova Igor Dodon said the leaders of all the political entities that are dissatisfied with the work of the government should initiate protests. Representatives of Șor Party, the Party of Communists and the Party of Socialists already mounted antigovernment protests. The leader of the Party “Pro Moldova” announced a protest in front of the Parliament Building for Sunday.
