Maia Sandu says her Solidarity and Action Party PAS will continue protesting in autumn against the new electoral system, which she thinks creates an unfair advantage to the current governing party.

In an interview with RFE/RL’s Moldovan service, the former presidential runner-up denied the possibility of making peace with the government and cooperating with President Igor Dodon, while also being reluctant about any cooperation with politicians like Renato Usaty.

“We are protesting against the changed electoral system, because this means an attempt to rig and manipulate elections. Igor Dodon, for his part, is trying to promote his narrow interests and build a country where one man can decide everything. Obviously he wants to take over Plahotniuc’s role and this is not what we want. We believe in a democratic system, in a genuinely parliamentary system, not like the one we have today – controlled and manipulated by one man”, said Maia Sandu.

She added that judging by the quite bitter reactions from the west the government won’t be able to rely on western support, and the implementation of the new electoral system in practice will lead to a dramatic decrease in, if not discontinuation of, the financial aid offered to our country.

“This government is obviously unable to build a trustworthy relationship with our development partners, just like it can’t build a trustworthy relationship with its own citizens. They have to admit this and if they are so incompetent and recognize that we are better at communicating with the European institutions, they should let us take it from here”, declared Maia Sandu.
