Maia Sandu at briefing with Borut Pahor: Moldova sees its future in EU

The Eastern Partnership Summit that will be held in December during the Slovenian presidency of the Council of the EU is very important for advancing the European agenda of the Republic of Moldova, President Maia Sandu stated after a meeting with the President of Slovenia Borut Pahor in Chisinau, IPN reports. “We hope that this summit will lay the basis for further strengthening the Eastern Partnership and will offer a clearer perspective to the associated states. As the president of the Council of the European Union, Slovenia can promote these encouragement messages that can give an impetus to the cooperation within this regional platform,” stated Maia Sandu.

In the same development, Borut Pahor expressed his confidence that the meeting in Brussels will be a step forward as regards the European perspective of the EaP countries. In a similar way, decisions concerning the European extension in the countries of Western Balkans are to be taken in Ljubljana next week. As the president of the Council of the EU, Slovenia will chair these events as it is a supporter of the given processes.

In the joint press briefing, Maia Sandu mentioned the preoccupations of the government of the Republic of Moldova, noting the justice sector reform, strengthening of the corruption fighting institutions, economic development, including by creating economic opportunities for the citizens to work at home, improvement of the quality of governance and public services so as to regain the people’s confidence. “We bank on Slovenia in our efforts to transform the Republic of Moldova into a country with increased resilience before internal and external challenges,” stated the President.

For his part, Borut Pahor said the goal of his visit to the Republic of Moldova is to extend the Moldovan-Slovenian relations in different areas. “I want to support you in the process of improving the quality of life of citizens, in strengthening the democratic values in society, in solving the neighborhood problems and in what is called the European perspective of your country. You will not solve everything overnight, but you can soon ensure what Moldova wants – a better future, peace with the neighbors and the European perspective,” noted the President of Slovenia.
