The European Action Movement has said in a statement published today, September 11, that the resignation of Vladimir Voronin as Moldovan president puts an end to the darkest period in Moldova’s history. “The MAE, together with the citizens of Moldova, has witnessed today what appears to be the first, and probably the last, display of normality by Vladimir Voronin as a politician, who announced his resignation from the post of head of state and the retraction of the PCRM into opposition. The fact that the promoter of the authoritarian regime, instituted eight years ago in Moldova, himself recognized publicly the defeat of the corrupt communist system which he instituted, represents a long-awaited liberation for the citizens”, the statement reads. The movement says it also pleads for a strong, fast-track process of modernization in Moldova, which should comprise economic and anticorruption reforms. The MAE insists that all the democratic political forces, not just those who entered Parliament, should participate in remedying the state of Moldova, “in order to avoid a return of the communists against the background of the dire economic situation”. “It would be naive to think that the PCRM will stand by and let Moldova be freed from under the red boot of communism! The PCRM will sabotage, will criticize and will lead an active policy of national fragmentation, with the sole purpose of returning to power”, the MAE declares. “At the latest elections, the MAE’s ultimate goal was to displace communist from power as a precondition for remedying the state of Moldova. We believe that, to a certain extent, we also contributed to this victory of democracy. The MAE aims to further channel its entire potential to creating a better living for the Moldovans”. “We consider that this should be the principal goal of the democratic government, and the MAE will serve as a disinterested partner to all those who will act towards this essential goal and towards diminishing corruption in Moldova. It is an act of responsibility, which the proponents of democratic values must follow”. “May it be that those eight years of sufferings lived under communist rule be recuperated through economic development, political stability and safeguards for civil liberties”, the MAE said in concluding the statement.
