Democratic MP Ludmila Guzun said the party she represents is for snap elections for a number of reasons. “We know very well what laws were adopted by the undeclared PSRM-Shor Party majority during the last two weeks of the previous session, on whose constitutionality the Constitutional Court is to pronounce. Beyond the interest of the parties that will compete in these elections, people’s interests should also be taken into account as the country needs to be governed before the snap elections, during the election campaign and until a parliamentary majority is formed,” Ludmila Guzun stated in IPN’s public debateWhat parliamentary parties think about snap elections, if they anticipate them?”

The MP noted that to initiate snap parliamentary elections, the legislative body and the presidential administration should come to terms. “We know that Maia Sandu and the parliamentary groups had meetings and I think this dialog should continue already with concrete proposals. It’s now time to discuss concrete scenarios,” stated Ludmila Guzun.

She considers for the elections to be free and fair, the state institutions should not become involved in the election campaign. “We see what is happening today and saw what happened in the presidential elections, when representatives of the state institutions, local state-owned enterprises in particular, campaigned to a maximum. If such a path is followed again, the results will not be those expected by the people,” said Ludmila Guzun.

The MP noted the Democratic parliamentary group didn’t discuss the scenario of snap elections induced by the non-adoption of laws during three months as they consider the legislature should fulfill its duties. They are yet ready to have consultations so as to together reach a consensus with the presidential administration as to how snap elections can be caused.

“No one can now guarantee that the future Parliament will generate a majority, a government able to manage the affairs as the citizens of the Republic of Moldova want. It is yet definite that snap elections will take place and the people will have to pronounce. Currently, the parliamentary parties and the presidential institution should take a step back and achieve a consensus as to how to have snap elections faster.”

The public debate “What parliamentary parties think about snap elections, if they anticipate them?” is the 167th installment of the series “Developing political culture through public debates” that is supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
