WatchDog expert Valeriu Pașa said the upcoming local elections are very unimportant from political and symbolical viewpoints. In the talk show “Important” on TVC21 channel, he noted the local elections are expected to be a big failure for the Democratic Party, IPN reports.

He stated a majority of votes on the Central Election Commission cannot be ensured as, even if the parliamentary majority has more representatives, the Party of Socialists and the Bloc ACUM are electoral opponents. “Each of these entities is interested in gaining more votes in elections, especially in the towns that are strategic places. The municipalities of Chisinau and Balti will be the main places,” stated Valeriu Pașa.

Political commentator Victor Ciobanu said the next local elections should be held correctly and ensuring this should be the task of the CEC, even if this institution is politicized. There is now a particular balance of forces inside the Central Election Commission that prevents the institution from working as until now, in favor of one political player.

According to the commentator, the local elections will also be a kind of test for the current parliamentary majority. “I think ACUM and the PSRM for now have all the reasons to come to terms as they remember well the shock they both experienced and the fear that existed when the coalition was being formed. That’s why they will stick together for now,” stated Victor Ciobanu.

He noted an important element is to bring the electoral lists in order given the new population data provided by the National Bureau of Statistics.

The next local elections will take place on October 20 this year.
