The European Union follows attentively the developments in Moldova because the country turned from a success story into a potential hotbed of instability that worries the European officials, international relations expert Lina Grau stated for IPN when asked to say how the Europeans look now at Moldova.
Lina Grau noted that the Russian press presented the protests mounted in Chisinau as anti-European, disseminating such information in the West too. “The protests are actually against the oligarchic system and I think it is a big problem for the government when different forces join together and stage protests. However, there is a danger that the protests will be thwarted. I consider that the leaders of the Platform “Dignity and Truth” didn’t feel very comfortable alongside Igor Dodon and Renato Usatyi. The voters who are represented neither by the government nor by the protesting forces remain,” she stated.
The expert said the events taking place in the center of Chisinau are dangerous. “Things can take an unpredictable twist and I think that Russia is glad about what is going on – nothing is clear, the people are confused and Russia can play its game. Things can lead to the establishment of dictatorship. The rulers will hold power by pressing the protesting forces and threatening them with criminal cases,” noted Lina Grau.
She considers the EU took a break and follows attentively the events taking place in the Republic of Moldova. It was put in the situation to stabilize ‘a fool man so that this does not do silly things’. The European Union will not say that it does not want a Government in Moldova because ‘you must have a coherence factor in order to discuss with a fool’.
