If snap local elections take place in Chisinau, the mayor’s seat will be won also by a Liberal, thinks the party’s president Mihai Ghimpu.

During a talk show on Moldova 1, the Liberal leader said this could be Dorin Chritoaca or some other unnamed Liberal. “Because the city residents saw for themselves that only the Liberals are hard-working, correct, professional and devoted to the city”, said Ghimpu, adding: “When Dorin Chirtoaca took over as Chisinau mayor in 2007, he inherited a city with a debt of 800 million lei and with all the municipal companies belly-up, but he managed to achieve growth for the city and people see this”.

Ghimpu insists that Chirtoaca would be back as Chisinau mayor anyway, because he has a mandate won by popular vote. “If we had a fair justice system, we wouldn’t have been in this situation. Dorin Chirtoaca is the one and only mayor, as he was elected by the people. And the failed referendum initiated by the Socialists reconfirmed this”.

Political pundit Corneliu Ciurea commented that all the work done by the acting mayor Silvia Radu, backed by the Democrats, could be undone one day if Dorin Chirtoaca comes back. He added that Chisinau was the Liberals’ last bastion and they would better keep it if they wanted to survive.
