The Liberal Party is proposing that Moldovan migrant workers should be exempted from the so-called vignette tax for one month when they return to Moldova on vacation. Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu stated that his party won't endorse a tax of hundreds of euros. “If the decision is adopted in Parliament, this will be oil on troubled waters and this will be a demonstration that we are respecting European standards. You can't march towards the EU family and apply double standards in road taxes. However, a Moldova which is looking to obtain freedom of movement for its citizens should not charge higher vignette rates than in European Union countries, either”, said Ghimpu. MP Vadim Cojocaru, a member of the parliamentary Commission on Economy, said the vignette should cost 3 euros for one week, 5 euros for two weeks, 9 euros for one month and 25 euros for 180 days, as compared to a maximum rate of 380 euros initially proposed by the Government. “This suggestion is based on the practice of the neighboring countries”, said Cojocaru. The so-called vignette bill is due to be debated today in Parliament after the Government revised it.
