World weightlifting champion Vadim Vacarciuc will run for mayor of Balti municipality on behalf of the Liberal Party. In a communiqué, the party says the decision was taken in a meeting of the Council of the Balti-based local organization of the Liberal Party by a unanimous vote, Info-Prim Neo reports. Vadim Vacarciuc is the deputy head of the Liberal Party’s local office in Balti. He is a world weightlifting champion and vice champion. In December 2008, he was appointed as vice president of the Moldovan Weightlifting Federation. Among Vadim Vacarciuc’s opponents in the battle for the mayoralty of Balti is Vasile Panciuc, of the Communist Party. His candidacy was earlier confirmed by the party’s leader Vladimir Voronin. Vasile Panciuc had served as mayor of Balti since June 2001 until January 2011. Afterward, he entered Parliament and renounced the post of mayor. The Democratic Party also announced its candidate for mayor of Balti. This is former commissioner of the municipality Anatolie Harchenko, who is the deputy head of the party’s local organization in Balti. The Liberal Democratic Party has not yet fielded a candidate, but this may be the former mayor of Balti Vladimir Tonchiuk, according to press reports. The candidates can submit the documents for being registered from next week. Until then, there will be constituted the local district councils of first and second levels.
