Liberal lawmakers to attend forum in Washington

Mihai Ghimpu and Ion Hadarca, MPs of the Liberal Party of Moldova, will be taking part in the meeting of the Parliamentary Forum of the Community of Democracies that will be held in Washington on September 15, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting the Parliament’s press office.
In the forum, Mihai Ghimpu will deliver a speech on the topic “Support for the success of democracy: Role of the legislative bodies in transition assistance and democratic governance”.
According to the UN General Assembly, the current meeting of the Parliamentary Forum themed “Strengthening freedom and democratic governance: Role of the Parliamentary Forum of the Community of Democracies” is held on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy, which is celebrated annually on September 15.
The aim of the meeting is to strengthen democracy and human rights all over the world. There will be discussed the problems that appeared in the process of strengthening democracy and the solutions proposed by the lawmakers for defending freedom and human rights in the context of the present challenges.
The meeting in Washington will be attended by members of the U.S. Congress and the European Parliament, the Heads of Parliament of Lithuania and Albania, lawmakers from the U.S., Canada, Russia, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Georgia, Argentina, Mexico, and Mongolia and representatives of such international democratic institutions as the National Endowment for Democracy, the International Republican Institute and the National Democratic Institute.
MPs Mihai Ghimpu and Ion Hadarca are co-founders of the Parliamentary Forum of the Community of Democracies and signatories of the Vilnius Declaration of 2010, whereby the given forum was created.
The Parliamentary Forum of the Community of Democracies launched last March brings together lawmakers from 18 member states of the Community of Democracies. Its objectives are to establish multilateral cooperation with the aim of strengthening democracy and promoting peace, to develop the states that it represents and to ensure the respect for human rights all over the world.
