Leu appreciated against U.S. dollar at end-October

The Moldovan leu at the end of October deprecated by 0.1% in average values against the U.S. dollar to 19.4245 USD/MDL, from 19.4072 USD/MDL in September, IPN reports.

The National Bank of Moldova said the degree of covering the net demand for currency from business entities by the net supply of currency from private individuals in October was 128.2%, as against 103.5% in September. Against the previous month, the net supply of currency from private individuals decreased by US$52.2 million (- 17.8%), while the net demand for currency from business entities – by US$95.4 million (-33.7%). The Bank intervened and bought currency totaling US$69.8 million on the local interbank market.

“Given the inflation forecasts and the market developments following the increase in energy charges globally and in the Republic of Moldova as well and the
geopolitical situation, the NBM attentively monitors the developments and will intervene by its monetary policy to create appropriate conditions on the monetary, lending and currency market,” said the central bank.
