Letter to the Chancellor of Federal Republic of Germany, Angela Merkel
With this letter, National NGO Council, members of National Participation Council and several constituent organizations, deeply thank Your Excellency, Ms Merkel four your visit and the message that you bring to our country! We consider your visit as a gesture of respect and encouragement for Moldovan citizens, who make considerable efforts to build a democratic state. Your presence in European politics is an example that shows that women holding important positions can work for the good of their country and of Europe as a whole!
Excellence, we admire you for your current successes, but also for the achievements obtained as Minister of Women and Youth, in promoting in your country the Law on equality. However, from the information in our possession, in Chisinau you will meet only male political leaders, because Moldovan politics is by definition ”masculine”.
Because our country's Prime Minister has informed us through the media, that you will come with a message for Moldovan citizens, civil society representatives are sending you the request to include in Your speech a special message to the politicians from Moldova – about the support and importance of balanced participation of women and men in decision-making. Please refer to the relevance of the role of civil society in a democratic country and please recommend Moldovan politicians to promote people in decision-making position based on their merits, without discriminating women from Moldova!
We would like to mention that civil society organizations in our country warned several times the public institutions through calls, open letters and press events, that a modern state based on democratic principles must ensure and promote gender equality.
We are confident that your visit will help support gender equality in decision making and to promote women in Moldova, so that they have the same opportunities as men to occupy important positions in the state and to engage in politics.
Probably because of very constraint program for your visit, there was not room for a meeting with civil society and we were not invited to assist at your speech, therefore we found this way to be heard by Your Excellency.
