The detention conditions of the convicts from the Penitentiary Institution of the Leova town are not corresponding to international standards. This is the conclusion of the Center for Human Rights after visiting the institution.
According to a communiqué of the Center, 36 convicts addressed to the ombudsmen on the grounds of their rights infringement because of the detention conditions. Especially the convicts are not pleased of the “bad quality of the food, drinking water and of the cells, the superficial heating of the rooms during winter etc.”
The visit of the Center’s Commission, headed by the ombudsman Ivan Cucu confirmed to some extent the shortcomings mentioned by the convicts but he stated that “the arguments presented at the beginning by the petitioners are not corresponding to the real state of being and are a put-up affair”. In the communiqué is also mentioned that the administration of the penitentiary undertakes all the necessary measures for improving the situation.
The members of the commission met with the convicts and answered to their questions and explained the modalities of solving the problems in conformity with the legislation in force.
