The mandate of the People’s Assembly of Gagauz Yeri expires at the end of this year, but its members could make use of their right to continue working for three months more, thus the legislative elections could be held at the beginning of 2008. According to a press release from the Gagauzia Governor, the leadership of the executive and of the People’s Assembly met on August 28 to discuss the issue of the future elections. Governor Mihail Forumzal said he considers the period between late November and early December, when the mandate of the incumbent deputies expires, as the optimal period to hold legislative elections. According to the press release, the representatives of the People’s Assembly refrained from making comments on the issue, but mentioned their right to prolong their mandate for three months. Other issues brought into discussion at the meeting were the situation in the region’s agriculture, and the draft budget for the next year.
