The Republic of Moldova cannot act according to circumstances and cannot allow double standards in the case of Ukraine. It didn’t recognize the independence of Kosovo region even after a referendum was held there and won’t recognize the independence of the Crimean peninsula either. What happens in Ukraine is dramatic. The country needs support, including from Moldova. Such statements were made by the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party Vlad Filat and the head of the Democracy Party Marian Lupu in the program “Replica” on Prime TV, IPN reports.

Vlad Filat underlined that Moldova cannot adopt conjuncture-dependant approaches.
“We do not have the right and interest to speak trenchantly about the tragedy through which Ukraine goes. We must make common cause and be near those who need out support. We should not only expect others to help us. The referendum held in Crimea runs counter to the Constitution of Ukraine and the international law,” stated the politician.

He added that an attempt is made not to declare the independence of Crimea, but to join a region of a country to another country. They make effort to annex this territory by pressure and by use of military force.

Marian Lupu reminded that Moldova didn’t recognize the independence and statehood of Kosovo. “We cannot have double standards. The problem is similar and concerns the country’s integrity, either it is about the Kosovo or Crimea. How can we speak about a referendum when there are armed people and paramilitary forces? There are no conditions for holding a legal referendum. The authorities of Ukraine experience difficulties, but control their actions and statements and do not allow phobias and hysteria to overwhelm them. We should do the same in Moldova,” he stated.
