MP Sergiu Litvinenco, of the PAS group of the ACUM Bloc, said the law that enables to provide citizenship by investment involves threats to national security. More exactly, persons with a dubious and criminal past will be able to legalize ill-gotten gains in Moldova.

Speaking in Parliament about the moratorium on the law to provide citizenship by investment that expired on February 20, the MP said the name of the law is formal as this is in reality a law that allows to sell the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova. He reminded the Socialist MPs that the abrogation of this law formed part of the country deoligarchization package that they promised to vote.

According to Sergiu Litvinenco, the only benefit of this law is that it brings money to the state that is needed in the current economic situation and amid the foreign isolation of the country. But it involves a series of risks, including the fact that dubious persons will be able to legalize their money.

The MP made reference to European officials’ statements that this law involves enormous corruption-related risks that generate such major risks as the annulment of the right to travel freely and without visas in the EU, which was obtained by Moldova in 2014.

“The law to sell the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova enables foreigners to buy farmland. The foreigner will first obtain the citizenship of Moldova and can then purchase even all the country’s farmland. Is this a state policy of the program of the Chicu Government? Is this a promise with which Dodon and the Socialists went to the own voters?” asked rhetorically Sergiu Litvinenco.

He noted they insist on this law because the Socialists have serious financial problems, while Dodon aims to win a new term in office in the upcoming presidential elections.
