Obtaining the political decision to open EU accession negotiations for the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine is the priority of the moment, declared Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis in a speech held at the Cotroceni Palace on the occasion of the Annual Convention of the Romanian Foreign Service. Klaus Iohannis mentioned that both states need the sustained commitment and firm support of the European Union and its member states with respect to their European future.
The president of Romania spoke about the war in Ukraine: “The disastrous global consequences of the war of aggression at our borders prompted our rapid adaptation and the formulation of firm responses along a clear and strongly assumed line of our foreign policy. You have been, countless times, in the front line of the effort to manage the effects of this war, setting in motion the diplomatic and consular mechanisms and instruments, proposing innovative approaches and constantly demonstrating the relevance of effective diplomacy”, declared President Klaus Iohannis.
President Iohannis added that Romania’s solidarity with Ukraine remained unwavering. “We received more than 5.7 million Ukrainians, we coagulated large-scale international humanitarian efforts, we facilitated the transit of more than 22.5 million tonnes of Ukrainian agricultural goods through Romania. These efforts are joined by the strong political support given to Ukraine at the level of the European Union and NATO, unprecedented steps in terms of international law, as well as our commitment to the continuation of Moscow’s isolation and the fight against Russia’s impunity”, declared the Romanian president.
