Beginning today, mixed teams each composed of one Moldovan and two Romanian border police officers will patrol the border area of both countries, IPN learned from a press release of the Iași Border Police Inspectorate.
The patrols will cover strips of land of up to 10 kilometers wide on either side of the border, and will follow the legislation of the respective state. As a matter of exception, patrols may depart from the operating area when the situation requires immediate and urgent action to follow up on an operation initiated within area.
Such joint patrolling missions are a modern form of cooperation that allows both countries to optimize resources, says the press release. Also, they enable the border authorities to use joint tactical actions to combat transborder crime and illegal migration.
The joint border patrols have been established by a Protocol between Moldova and Romania signed in November 2018.
