The Ministry of Culture and the National Museum of History of Moldova exhibited the Jewish historical and cultural heritage from collections at an exhibition titled “Jewish marks in the Republic of Moldova’s history, culture and memory”. The exhibits include documents, photos, decorations, works of art, books, articles of clothing, memorial objects and other relics that reconstruct aspects of the history of the Jewish community in Moldova and render homage to famous persons who made a special contribution to developing culture, science and society in Moldova.

“The exhibition forms part of the current museum circuit. It will be open until December 3 and forms part of the category of temporary exhibitions,” Natalia Popovicil, head of the National Museum of History’s Public Relations and Museum Education Division, has told IPN.

Among the Jews who fully integrated into Moldova society and left undying works are: sculptor Lazăr Dubinovski, architect Valentin Voitsehovski, composer David Gershfeld and many others.

A separate section of the exhibition contains touching images of the Holocaust and encourages the public to realize the necessity of knowing the truth about the crimes of fascism. Researchers say about 6 million Jews became victims of the Holocaust and 1.5 million of these were children. About 270,000 Jews died in the ghettoes and camps of Bessarabia and Transnistria.

The exhibition forms part of the series of events stipulated in the action plan for implementing the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova’s Declaration on the Acceptance of the Report of the International Commission for the Study of the Holocaust chaired by Elie Wiesel.
