“If Moldova maintains this accelerated pace of reform, as in the past two years, I believe that the accession to the EU by 2030 is possible,” Jānis Mažeiks, EU Ambassador to Moldova, stated for the Ukrainian source “Suspilne” on the eve of today’s International Mayors Summit in Chisinau, IPN reports.

Currently, the subject of the negotiating framework is at the approval phase of each parliament of the member countries. “How they will move forward, I cannot make predictions,” stressed the diplomat.

Jānis Mažeiks noted that the EU wants Moldova to join the European Union together with the reintegrated Transnistria. “For us, there is only one negotiating partner. This is the government in Chisinau. And we have only one Moldova within its internationally recognized borders. It is in our interest for Moldova to join the EU with a reintegrated Transnistria. At the same time, we don’t want the country to be caught in the grip of political commitments (of this kind). We can accept that the accession of the right bank, the territory controlled by the constitutional authorities, will take place first and will be followed by the reunification with the left bank. But this is an undesirable option,” he said.

According to the quoted source, as in Moldova, the alignment of justice institutions with the European standards is one of the biggest problems of the authorities of neighboring Ukraine is. In particular, Brussels asks Kiev to reform the Constitutional Court, to continue the justice sector reform, to fight corruption, including the appointment of the head of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, to combat money laundering, to implement the anti-oligarchic law, to harmonize the audiovisual legislation with the European law, to amend the legislation on national minorities.
