There is no shortage of inputs, diesel or technology in agriculture, there is a shortage of finance. Iurie Rija, an expert in agrarian policy, says there is a need for an accessible financial sector that will protect farmers from the pitfalls of accessing credit.

At the public debate: "Moldovan Agriculture in the Context of European Integration", organized by IPN News Agency, the expert said that today farmers do not have access to cheap and advantageous financial sources.

"Farmers are in a situation when they do not have circulating means, possibilities to finance their activity further, they are practically at the red line. Traders refuse to advance them. They are practically financially blocked," said Iurie Rija, who is also the director of the Association of Exporters and Importers of Agricultural and Cereal Products.

Iurie Rija also says that many Moldovans who have worked abroad have invested their money in various agricultural businesses, but ended up bankrupt.

Natural disasters have increased in recent years, which has put pressure on the agricultural sector. In other respects, however, the sector is moving forward. We are talking here about advanced and modern technology which has been important in the Republic of Moldova.

"Farming with your bare hands, with a hoe, as in the Stone Age, is still not right. In the given technological chapter, we see a trend to be appreciated, based on the conditions in which farmers have been working in recent years," the expert noted.

The public debate on "Moldovan agriculture in the context of European integration" is organized within the project "IPN News Agency for social cohesion and pro-European Moldova", financed by IMS.
