Iurie Ciocan decided to leave the post of member of the Central Election Commission (CEC). He tendered his resignation to Parliament on June 27. Two days ago, Iurie Ciocan also terminated the employment contract with the Center for Reform Implementation that he had headed since 2017.
Contacted by IPN for a comment, Iurie Ciocan said he decided to quit because he does not agree with the changes made to the current legislation.
On June 18, the parliamentary majority adopted amendments that simplify the procedure for dismissing the CEC members. These could be fired by the authorities that named them without the court of law needing to confirm the dismissal.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Maia Sandu accused Iurie Ciocan of unjustifiably collecting a salary of 70,000 lei a month as director of the Center for Reform Implementation, which is a public institution founded by the Government.
Iurie Ciocan had served with the Central Election Commission since 2003. He held the post of president (2011–2016) and secretary of the Commission (2005–2011).
