Transport and Roads Minister Iurie Chirinciuc, formerly a member of the Parliament Economy Committee, today has been heard by anticorruption prosecutors in the Banca de Economii (BEM) case.

The prosecutors said the official provided accounts as a witness, detailing the circumstances related to the frauds perpetrated in the banking sector as well as the measures taken to restore security in the financial system.

Last week the prosecutors heard Victor Barbaneagra, deputy finance minister in 2009-2014. He is under investigation on charges of neglect of duty that allegedly led to the state losing the majority interest in BEM. Earlier, similar charges were brought against Angela Susanu, deputy director of the Public Property Agency, and former deputy economy minister Dumitru Godoroja.

In late May, the Prosecutor General's Office extended the investigation into the bank fraud and a number of high-profile officials were summoned to be heard.
