The strategic partnership between the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine is the most important thing at present and Chisinau should profit from the chance offered by Kiev concerning the joint border control, Iulian Chifu, director of the Center for Conflict Prevention and Early Warning, stated in the program “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.
Chifu does not rule out the possibility that Moscow will exert enormous pressure on Chisinau, but this will have to resist and to make this pressure public. “The Republic of Moldova will have to assert itself as a serious state or will have to admit publicly that it does not have capacity and political will to do this,” he stated.
Iulian Chifu considers Chisinau should not react to the statements by the two Russian Duma deputies about the possibility of a war in Moldova, similar to that in Donbas. “This is sheer bravado to cause a virulent reaction. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia should be asked if it supports these statements,” he said.
According to Chifu, the threats are rather unreal. “It is a threat, but we should analyze things. I don’t think that Ukraine will allow Russian troops to cross its territory. To reach Transnistria, the Russian military should enter two airspaces, including that of Ukraine, but the Ukrainian authorities will not allow this. Moldova will also not allow military planes to land on its territory,” he stated.
