The information technology industry in 2023 became the largest export sector of the Moldovan economy, accounting for almost ¼ of the service exports. This year, the turnover in the IT sector will come to 13.2 billion lei and 85% of the IT services will be intended for export, said Veaceslav Ioniță, economic policy expert of the Institute for Development and Social Initiatives “Viitorul”. According to him, goods exports have declined this year, while the IT service exports have expended, IPN reports.
The expert noted that the IT industry can be considered the development engine of the Moldovan economy. In 2010, this sector generated 800 million lei a year and only 35% were services intended for export. In 13 years, this sector developed into the main sector of the national economy, growing 16 times in the period. No other sector in Moldova witnessed such a jump.
Veaceslav Ioniță noted that at a time when the goods exports from Moldova have significantly decreased this year, by at least US$400 million, the service exports have increased, primarily due to the IT industry. This year the service exports are expected to be by 23% or US$525 million higher. Total exports will be US$2.8 billion and the IT service exports will add up to US$605 million, which is 22% of all the service exports. Fifteen years ago, the IT service exports constituted only 0.7% of all service exports.
According to the expert, to ensure the continuity of this growth pace, it is very important for Parliament to urgently adopt the legislative amendments proposed by the Government. This way, those from the IT sector will be stimulated to further attract investments.
