It is highly improbable that Communists’ appeal not to vote in elections will be successful, opinion

The fielding by the Party of Socialists and “Our Party” of own candidates for the presidential elections dooms the Party of Communists’ appeal not to take part in elections because these are ‘illegal’ to failure, political analyst Igor Botan says in an analysis published on the portal alegeri.md, quoted by IPN.

According to the analyst, the people’s right to choose the Head of State themselves was restored in an unordinary way, by a Constitutional Court judgment, without the Constitution being amended by Parliament or by a constitutional referendum. The Court decided yet to annul a part of the constitutional amendments of 2000, not all of them.

Igor Botan says the given judgment by the Constitutional Court was also challenged by the Party of Socialists and “Our Party”. The Socialists applied to the Court to be sure that the election results will be validated given that the constitutional time limits for setting the election date were not respected. “Our Party” disputed in public the fact that the CC declared unconstitutional only the procedure for electing the head of state in Parliament, not yet the modification of the age limit for candidates.

Despite these challenges, both of the parties provided own candidates for the October 30 presidential elections – Igor Dodon and, respectively, Dumitru Chubashenko. Igor Botan says this fact makes the success of the Communists’ appeal not to vote in elections highly improbable even if the minimum voter turnout remained 1/3.

The analyst notes that in 2010, when they boycotted the referendum, the Communists were supported by 40% of the voters, as opposed to 10% now. The Party of Socialists and “Our Party”, which attracted most of the supporters of the Communists on their side, now aim to ensure the voters who were once loyal to the Party of Communists will take part in elections.
