The fact that the Republic of Moldova belongs to the Black Sea Basin is an advantage because this forms part of a dynamic area that is traditionally important geostrategically for the European continent and there are number of states that would like to control this region, expert of the Institute for Development and Social Initiative “Viitorul” Ion Tăbârță stated in the talk show “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

“The Black Sea is an important commercial region that is at the intersection of geopolitical areas and not accidentally the Russian Federation, and not only, insists on controlling the territory of the Black Sea,” stated Ion Tăbârță.

The expert noted that the Black Sea is now the hot point of Europe. In the 1990s the Balkans were a powder barrel for the European security. Currently, especially after the crisis in Ukraine, the weight center with conflict potential moved from the Balkans to the Black Sea Basin. Russia’s revanchist policy that resulted in several conflicts in the post-Soviet area and more recently the Turkish factor make the Black Sea be treated with a lot of prudence by the great players.

Analyst Corneliu Ciurea said the conflict of interests in the Black Sea region is too big. The international community would like peace to be in this region, but this cannot be ensured there. Russia, Turkey, the U.S. and less the EU dispute the lead in the area. “As we are considered a country of the Black Sea Basin even if we do not have direct access to this Sea, we suffer the consequences of the policies pursued by the big powers,” he stated.
