International Grandmaster Ion Dosca has won two bronze medals in classical and blitz in the absolute category and three gold medals in the veterans’ category at the 2023 Baltic States Draughts Open that was held in Estonia. He also ranked first among veterans in all the programs of the championship, IPN reports.

The Baltic States Draughts Open consisted of three tournaments in three programs. The three programs (classical, rapid, and blitz) differ from each other primarily due to the time given to players for a match. The classical program has the maximum period of time, while rapid and blitz – the shortest period of time. In classical and blitz, Ion Dosca ranked third in the general rankings and fifth in the rapid program. Besides this, the organizers compile separate rankings for veteran participants in the competition. In all the three programs, Ion Dosca ranked first among veterans.

It should be noted that in 1992 and 1995, Ion Dosca became Baltic States champion for two times, while in 2017, Dosca triumphed at the World Cup that took place in Estonia, beating Russia’s Nikolay Struchkov, four-times world champion, in the decisive match. Last year, our compatriot emerged victorious in Estonia’s championship.

Ion Dosca is the top Moldovan draughts player of all time. He is 20-times champion of the Republic of Moldova, world champion, champion of the USSR and the U.S.

Ion Dosca is trained by his wife Elena Tkacheko, emeritus trainer of the Republic of Moldova, who became champion of Latvia in 2023.
