Prime Minister Ion Chicu expressed his confidence that no matter who wins the presidential elections, there will be no political destabilization in the Republic of Moldova. In case of political confrontations, the country risks remaining without an agreement with the IMF.

“If the country faces a political crisis after the presidential elections and we are unable to approve the budget for next year and the program with the IMF because of the political destabilization, we will experience difficulties no matter who wins the presidential elections. That’s why I bank on the maturity and wisdom of the politicians. These important laws need to be adopted. Later, we will see,” Premier Chicu stated in the talk show “Moldova Live” on the public TV channel.

The official said the Republic of Moldova does not need political instability now that the weather is growing colder, the pandemic persists and the effects of the drought continue to be felt.

As to the budgetary-fiscal policy and the main budget parameters, Premier Chicu said these were discussed and coordinated with the IMF.

“For the next year, we coordinated with the Fund the augmentation of the expenditure of the national public budget by almost 7 billion lei on 2020. The money will be primarily used as investments and to raise the salaries of medical personnel. We have 1.84 billion lei for doctors and 1.2 billion lei for the salaries of other public sector employees,” stated the official.

Ion Chiuc noted that the IMF welcomes the Moldovan Government’s intention to keep the costs for infrastructure high. “This means jobs, paid taxed, stimuli on the whole value chain of the economy and I think we should continue this way.”
