The mayor of Chisinau municipality Ion Ceban, who is the deputy chairman of the Congress of Local Authorities of Moldova (CALM), said the central administration exerts pressure on the local public authorities and does not fulfill the promises made in the election campaign. The mayor noted he asked for a meeting with the Parliament’s Standing Bureau to discuss the commitments undertaken by the current government. He said that if the mayors are not heard, they are ready to take to the streets, IPN reports.

“What worries me the most and, probably concerns each mayor in the locality, is what the Ministry of Finance did, with Parliament limiting further the autonomy of the local authorities. The good people turned out to be very bad in this regard and I hope a lot that we will be able to make a common front with all the mayors. I’m ready to take to the streets together with the other mayors if such pressure and a destructive approach to the activity of the local public authorities are continued,” Ion Ceban stated Monday.

The administration of CALM made an approach to Parliament, asking for a meeting with the Standing Bureau. The mayor noted the Party of Action and Solidarity undertook to directly allocate the income tax collected from legal entities from a given area to the local budgets and this commitment should be fulfilled so that the settlements can develop.
