Mayor of Chisinau Ion Ceban said he will ask to harshly penalize the functionaries who do not do their job and will seek the resignation of those who make fortunes at people’s expense. He referred to the arrests made yesterday over unjust enrichment schemes that consisted in the sale of burial places at Saint Lazarus Cemetery, IPN reports.
“It is regrettable that someone earns money at people’s expense. I don’t know how they dare to do something like this, but I’m sure that there are more such schemes. We do not have many creameries, but have people who make fortunes at people’s expense. I will demand to strictly penalize those who do this and ignore people’s sorrows,” stated the mayor.
Ion Ceban said there will be punished all those who steal municipal property shamelessly and those who show only on paper that they performed repair works in a school or a kindergarten.
According to him all the deviations will be made known so as to combat this deep-rooted phenomenon. “A lot of large projects are being implemented in the city. Funds were allocated from the municipal budget and the state budget for different works, but this money should not be used by someone to enrich oneself. All the violations identified by the monitoring group will be made public, with the names of institutions,” noted Ion Ceban.
On September 1, six persons were arrested on suspicion that they implemented an unjust enrichment scheme by illegally selling burial places at Saint Lazarus Cemetery in Chisinau. The National Anticorruption Center said the scheme involved the cemetery head, his deputy, the accountant and other administration members. The arrests were made within over 130 criminal cases.
