A number of streets in Chisinau will be extended and built so as to unite particular sectors. A series of intersections will be modernized and equipped with smart traffic lights, incumbent mayor of Chisinau Ion Ceban, who is running for a new term in office, told a news conference. The candidate of the National Alternative Movement – the party that he heads - said the costs for large reconstruction projects were calculated and tender contests can be already initiated, IPN reports.

Ion Ceban noted that several streets will be extended to decongest the city. Among these is Mircea cel Bătrân Blvd which will be extended up to Bucovina St. A sum of 240 million lei is needed for the purpose. Mesager St will be reconstructed to connect Râșcani and Centru districts with Buiucani district, towards the exit from the city. This project was assessed at about 620 million lei. Another 280 million lei is needed to reconstruct Industriale St so that this connects the districts of Ciocana and Botanica.

“Current works are being carried out before launching extensive works. Such projects and works are complex. Time, experts are needed. These projects last for many years and the incurred costs are enormous. Surely, we will implement these projects together with our development partners. We are having negotiations,” said the candidate.

Creating a traffic monitoring center is another priority. To ensure the safety of pedestrians and to ease traffic, Ion Ceban promises to set up new traffic lights at crowded intersections, as it was done on Kiev St.

“We will identify solutions to ease traffic and to modernize crowded intersections, including the intersection of the streets Calea Moșilor and Ismail, near the Tobacco Factory. We developed the whole architecture of the traffic control system and this envisions several stages of implementation:  setting up of video surveillance cameras at intersections; replacement of road traffic signal controllers, etc.,” stated the election runner.

The goal is to partially repair 100 intersections and to fully renovate 88 intersections through extensive infrastructure elements.

The candidate also presented solutions for ensuring the security of pedestrians, including the building of refugee islands for pedestrians and overground pedestrian crossings and the lighting of all the crosswalks.

As it was decided by draw, Ion Ceban of the National Alternative Movement will be the 16th on the ballot slate.
