Integration into EU will be enshrined in Moldova’s Constitution that will be republished

Once the Constitutional Court confirms the results of the October 20 national constitutional referendum, the country's Constitution will be supplemented with Title V first: INTEGRATION INTO THE EUROPEAN UNION, IPN reports.

The preamble is completed with two new paragraphs with the following content:

"RECONFIRMING the European identity of the people of the Republic of Moldova and the irreversibility of the European path of the Republic of Moldova, DECLARING the integration into the European Union as a strategic objective of the Republic of Moldova".

Title V first – INTEGRATION INTO THE EUROPEAN UNION, Article 140 first, shall read as follows:

Accession to the Founding Treaties and to the Acts of Revision of the Founding Treaties of the European Union

(1) The accession of the Republic of Moldova to the Foundering Treaties of the European Union and also to the Acts of Revision of the Founding Treaties of the European Union shall be established by the Parliament by means of an organic law.( (2) As a result of accession, the provisions of the Foundering Treaties of the European Union, as well as other binding legal documents of the European Union, shall take precedence over the contrary provisions of domestic laws, in compliance with the provisions of the Act of Accession.'

The Constitutional Court on Thursday confirmed the results of the October 20 national constitutional referendum. To the question put up at the referendum: "Are you for amending the Constitution so as to enshrine the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union in it?", followed by the text of the law on the amendment of the Constitution, out of the total number of votes, 749,719 were for the "Yes" option, and 739,155 – for the "No" option.

The Court's judgment is final and cannot be appealed. Judges Sergiu Țurcan and Vladimir Țurcan expressed separate opinions.

The law to amend the Constitution adopted on October 20, 2024 by national constitutional referendum enters into force on the date of publication in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Moldova of the Constitutional Court’s decision. The Constitution will be republished in the Official Gazette.
