The initiators of the national legislative referendum on the abrogation of the law to amend the Election Code and introduce the mixed-member electoral system do not given up even if the Central Election Commission (CEC) refused to register the initiative group. The issue was developed in the talk show “Politics” on TV8 channel, IPN reports.
Stefan Gligor, programs director at the Center for Politics and Reforms and chairman of the initiative group, said the initiative to have a referendum bothered the Democratic Party so much that it decided to suppress it from the start as this is the only action in society that follows the right path in the whole process of usurpation of the power. “We created a platform and will insist on the continuation of the activity of this platform and on the annulment of the mixed-member electoral system at all costs, uniting society around a very clear problem – the usurpation of power,” stated Stefan Gligor.
Valeriu Pasa, civic activist and a member of the initiative group, said that all the members of the CEC voted against the registration of the initiative group, ignoring the arguments of the group, as this was the instruction, even if they knew that the decision was illegal. “This is only the beginning of the struggle against the mixed electoral system. What happened last Friday is another argument in favor of the annulment of this system. If the CEC dares to take an illegal and unmotivated decision before video cameras and in front of the eyes of all the citizens and international organizations, what can happen at the local level, in the local election commissions?,” asked Valeriu Pasa.
Vitalie Andrievschi, director of the Institute of Efficient Policy, said it would have been more convenient for the Democratic Party to register the initiative group as the process would have been long and ended in autumn. Until then the parties would have fielded candidates and the referendum would have failed. “I think the failing of the referendum would have been more suitable for the PDM and PSRM,” he noted.
On January 12, the Central Election Commission rejected the application to register the initiative group for organizing a national legislative referendum on the abrogation of the law by which the mixed-member electoral system was introduced, invoking violations of the legal norms.
