The Union of Independence War Veterans claims the Moldovan citizens’ right to receive Romanian citizenship in the shortest time possible and following a simpler procedure. A statement in this respect was handed by the Union’s head Eduard Maican and combatant Anatol Caraman to Romania’s President Traian Basescu during his visit to Chisinau on Tuesday, January 16, Info-Prim Neo reports. The statement says that the Romanians on the left bank of the Prut River, who had the misfortune to be born on the lands separated from Romania, are forced to undergo the “genocide promoted by oppressors that decimate them, falsify their history, systematically undermine their ancient traditions and customs, substitute the Romanian traditional culture for surrogates, making people forget their origin and nation and alienating them from their blood brothers”. The veterans called on President Traian Basescu to simplify the “draconian procedure” for regaining the Romanian citizenship. “Days and weeks at the door of Romania’s Consulate, tens of expensive trips to Bucharest, arrogance and indifference of the officials, are just several details that discourage even the most determined people to become again citizens of the Country”, the statement shows. The combatants say that, while the Romanian authorities are difficultly issuing Romania’s citizenship to Moldovans, such countries as Russia and Ukraine grant citizenship to their nationals from Moldova in the shortest time possible, using very simple procedures, and asked the Romanian authorities for the same thing. The opening of two Romanian Consulates in Cahul and Balti was decided after Traian Basescu visited Chisinau.
