The burning of waste and chemical substances in the Republic of Moldova will be regulated in accordance with the European standards. Each business entity will be responsible for the managed waste. They will either have to possess authorized storehouses outfitted with modern waste burning technologies or will have to sign a contract with a business entity that provides waste burning services, IPN reports.

In a news conference on October 30, Svetlana Bolocan, head of the Waste Management Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment, said the goal of the initiative is to reduce the impact on the environment. The business entities that will not burn the waste they generate in accordance with the new regulations will be penalized.

Svetlana Bolocan reminded that last summer Parliament adopted the Law on Waste, but the requirements towards businesses as regards the incineration of waste and chemical substances haven’t been clearly regulated. That’s why there were formulated proposals for amending and supplementing the law. The Government already approved them and Parliament is to also adopt them so that they start to be applied in 2018.

According to Svetlana Bolocan, the medical waste is a serious problem as this is now incinerated without implementing environment-friendly technologies, while the installations used at present are outdated. “To exclude this pollution factor, these incinerators should be adjusted to meet the technological requirements and have installations for capturing emissions and purifying the air. This will be required of all the incinerators,” stated Svetlana Bolocan.

Liudmila Marduhaeva, senior consultant of the Division, said the changes and supplements to the Law on Waste were formulated at the request of business entities that have storages for incineration or are ready to build them, but the old law didn’t contain clear requirements towards these and the incineration process.
