Imprisonment for the driver who caused the accident with 5 dead in Codreanca

The driver accused of causing the accident near the village of Codreanca, Strășeni district, in which 5 people were killed, was sentenced to seven years and one month in prison. He was also stripped of his driving license by the Straseni District Court, IPN reports.

In addition to the criminal sentence, the court ordered him to pay significant compensation for moral and material damages, funeral expenses and legal aid. The amount is not specified.

The sentence is to be served in a semi-closed prison. The sentence is not final and may be challenged in accordance with the law.

The General Prosecutor's Office states that the court ordered the defendant to pay more than 2 000 000 lei for the non-material damage caused by the crime. The 22-year-old will also have to pay other sums by way of legal costs, biological and material damages. The defendant has pleaded guilty to the alleged offense and has requested that the case be examined under a simplified procedure.

The accident occurred on the morning of August 10, 2024. The General Prosecutor's Office states that the accused, having been banned from driving means of transportation, got behind the wheel. On the M5 route, with the direction of travel towards the Chisinau municipality, with five persons as passengers, he ignored the provisions of the Road Traffic Regulation, performed an overtaking maneuver on the second lane of traffic, on which another car, driven by a 37-year-old man with four passengers, was moving. In order to avoid the impact, both drivers simultaneously swerved into the first lane and a head-on collision occurred.

As a result of the collision the two vehicles caught fire. Two passengers in the car driven by the defendant, a 17-year-old girl, who was his girlfriend, and a 56-year-old woman, a passenger, died on the spot. In the other car, the driver, his 32-year-old wife and the woman's 54-year-old mother died. Children were also injured in the accident and were pulled from the two cars before they were engulfed in flames. Three children, aged 7, 9 and 11, were seriously injured, a 6-year-old suffered moderate injuries and a one-year-old escaped with minor injuries.
