Over 300 million inhabitants of the planet, mostly from African regions that are dependent on Ukrainian grain exports, can be affected by a large-scale food crisis generated by the war in Ukraine. According to security experts, the Western leaders should swiftly identify a solution to stop the purchase of energy resources from the Russian Federation and this way to stop the financing of Russia’s war against Ukraine, IPN reports.
The global food crisis caused by the war in Ukraine is among the key subjects discussed at the extraordinary summit taking place in Brussels these days. The leaders of the 27 EU member states are trying to reach a compromise on the sixth package of sanctions against Russia.
“Currently, the European Union daily allocates €800 million for the hydrocarbons bought from Russia, which is €400 billion a year. This is a huge sum that enables Russia to continue this fierce war. This thing should be stopped as the effects of the war generate a considerable global food crisis. According to the UN, if a solution is not identified swiftly, over 300 million inhabitants of the planet will be affected, mostly from regions where rebellions quickly arise due to the shortage of food, such as Egypt, Lebanon, northern Africa. This region is considerably dependent on the wheat production of Ukraine,” expert of the Institute for Development and Social Initiatives “Viitorul” Igor Munteanu stated in the program “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.
The president of the Experts for Security and Global Affairs Association Angela Gramadă said that Ukraine’s economy was seriously affected by the war following the blocking of ports through which grain was exported. Also, Russia intentionally destroys the agricultural equipment and storehouses in Ukraine. The shortage of labor force is another pressing problem of Ukraine.
“According to the updated data, 6.7 million people fled Ukraine. It is hard to believe that the lack of workforce will be offset by making financial injections. The most important resource of the state - the human force - was lost in Ukraine. On the other hand, there are entrepreneurs who decided to relocate their businesses in the western parts of the country or transferred these to neighboring states, mainly Poland, which enables the Ukrainians to continue their activities from its territory. There is a solid tie between Poland and Ukraine. There is understanding of the mutual needs, while the linguistic barrier is almost absent between the two states,” noted Angela Gramadă.
The package of sanction against Russia prepared by the European Union envisions the introduction of a partial ban on oil deliveries from Russia. Such states as Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria reject such sanctions, arguing there are for now no alternatives to the Russian oil.
