The official Chisinau focuses on the Europeanization and democratization of the country. These processes will make the people from the left side of the Nistru to also want the Europeanization, said Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu. According to him, the modernization of the right bank of the Nistru is the best argument in favor of Moldova’s reintegration as this process will attract the citizens from Transnistria. The reintegration yet implies considerable financial costs that Chisinau needs to take into account, IPN reports.

Speaker Igor Grosu said the opening of accession negotiations, the country’s modernization and the improvement of the quality of life are the most convincing arguments in favor of Moldova’s reintegration.

“Now we need to concentrate our efforts on the opening of the accession negotiations. We must advance in doing reforms on the right bank as the palpable changes on the right bank are the best argument for our citizens from the left side of the Nistru. The European integration is that motivational element that is transposed through human rights, the freedom of expression, economic, development opportunities. The country’s reintegration will last as there are processes that also necessitate a financial effort. It will be a cost that we need to estimate,” Igor Grosu stated in the program “Reflection Points” on Vocea Basarabiei channel.

The Speaker said the Moldovan authorities are aware of the necessity of a dialogue with the Russian side on the withdrawal of the troops and munitions from the left side of the Nistru. The authorities will insist on the observance of the commitments undertaken by Russia at the 1999 Istanbul Summit.

“It will be a political effort related to the withdrawal of the 14th army from our territory, a political effort to have the ammunitions taken away. We will have to discuss with Russia, but not from the position of subordinates or province of this aggressor state. They assumed the Istanbul commitments. We will insist on the fulfillment of these commitments. The dialogue with Tiraspol in the 1+1 format needs to continue. There are humanitarian, social, economic problems that must be solved and we will maintain this contact,” stated Speaker Grosu.

According to the Public Services Agency, 364,986 persons living on the left side of the Nistru and in the municipality of Bender were in the State Population Register of the Republic of Moldova on September 13, 2023. Out of these, 355,934 had Moldovan nationality.
