The year 2023 was a historic one in which the Republic of Moldova obtained the important decision to open negotiations for accession to the European Union, while 2024 will be the year when the laborious negotiation process and preparations for accession will have to be launched, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu stated at the opening of the spring session, IPN reports.

The official noted that all these things are done to anchor Moldova in a space of peace, democracy and prosperity. “For the purpose, we need proper organization, synergy and a speed to step up these things as quickly and thoroughly as possible,” said Igor Grosu.

According to him, the actual process of assessing the compliance of Moldova’s legislation with the European one will be launched this month. In this respect, many laws must be approximated with the EU legislation.

“Also this year, in autumn, we will organize a very important political exercise and the preparations for this exercise, which is called referendum, should be launched during the current session. Moldova will say once and for all which part of the world it wants to belong to,” stated Igor Grosu.

He noted that the justice sector reform remains a priority for Parliament. The evaluation of judges must be completed so as to clear the system of those who discredited themselves. Also, the lawmakers will amend the Criminal Code to interrupt the statute of limitations when prosecutors transmit the criminal case to court, to prevent cybercrimes, but also bomb scares. Other initiatives relate to the declaration of property and interests, etc.

On Thursday Parliament started its ordinary spring session. According to the Regulations, the legislature has two ordinary sessions a year. The spring session begins in February and ends in July.
