The leader of the PSRM Igor Dodon said that September is the most suitable period for holding snap parliamentary elections. If the elections are held earlier, now that the vaccination pace is reduced, the PSRM could refuse take part in elections so as not to offer legitimacy to the electoral exercise, IPN reports.

The Socialist leader noted that his party is not against holding snap elections this year, but not at any cost, but only after hundreds of thousands of people are vaccinated.

“We will not accept to have snap elections be stepping on bodies. I understand that someone wants elections to be held as swiftly as possible, in June or in July. We will not take part in the process for the elections to be legalized. We agree that the elections should be held this year, but only after 600,000-700,000 people are vaccinated,” Igor Dodon stated in the program “Key Issue” on NTV Moldova channel.

Igor Dodon noted that if the PAS’s proposal to hold elections in summer is accepted and the vaccination pace remains low, the health system could collapse owing to the large number of infections.

“For us, it is more advantageous for the elections to take place in June as the voters will be in the country then, but we do not act according to narrow, party interests. We have concrete data showing that the number of infections will rise again after May 10. Should we start the election campaign amid such conditions?” asked the politician.

Igor Dodon also said that not the organization of elections, but the bringing of more COVID-19 vaccine doses should be now the priority. The donation of Sputnik-V vaccines promised by the Russian Federation is expected to come soon, on this weekend.

Earlier, the acting president of the PAS Igor Grosu said the snap parliamentary election should be held in July-August so that a Government could be voted in by September.
