The union wanted by a part of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova means civil war, President Igor Dodon stated in the program “Direct Access” on NTV Moldova channel. The President noted he will use all the legal ways to prevent the liquidation of Moldovan statehood, IPN reports.

President Dodon said the most difficult periods in the history of the Republic of Moldova were related namely to such tendencies that appeared in society. “Maybe someone intentionally causes this? Maybe such a scenario suits those who are in power as they understand that they will lose this autumn’s elections and probably want to destabilize the situation? We should be very attentive. We are examining this aspect in detail,” he stated.

To solve the problem of unionism by democratic ways, Igor Dodon suggested holding a referendum where the citizens will be asked what they want. “It’s clear that the overwhelming majority will be for keeping statehood, but we should clarify this issue once and for all. They will not yet accept such a referendum,” he said.

As to the fact that the current government wants to enshrine the European integration course of Moldova in the Constitution, President Dodon said this is nothing else but a PR action. “The Europeans do not trust the current parliamentary majority and Government. I have discussions with ambassadors. They stopped financing for justice, do not provide the promised money and criticize this Government,” he stated, adding that a referendum on the amendment of the Constitution should also be held.
